Day 1 & 2 – St Petersburg

So we arrived safely to minus 21 degree St Petersburg. An uneventful journey to be honest and very pleased to report that our luggage made it safely too!

This morning we had a guided tour of some of the sights with a very nice young Russian guide called Mary. Four hours in the cold was enough so we headed back to the hotel where I promptly fell asleep :-)

Tonight I’m on the hunt for blinis or proper chicken Kiev. Tomorrow we visit the Hermitage museum.

It’s a beautiful city and the architecture is stunning, but I’d maybe recommend visiting at a time when the rivers aren’t frozen (although I’d never seen a frozen river and it is an impressive sight).

Here’s a couple of pics from my iPhone.

Amazing Russian Orthodox church

The Winter Palace and Hermitage

Day 2 involved a trip into the Orthodox church above (which is incredible, the whole place is covered in mosaics inside) and a visit to the Winter Palace and Hermitage. The art in the palace is incredible. Seems bigger than the Louvre and with some massive collections of the likes of Picasso, Gaugin etc.

We get the midnight train to Moscow tonight!

Your Mother has gone pinched-faced just reading it – you know how much she likes the cold! Please send me a Russian doll, but with only one head that doesn’t come off!
